A weekend or a short business trip: a carrier day pass is simple and fine for one or two days. Beyond that, a travel eSIM is cheaper.
A week or two of vacation: a 5 to 10 GB travel eSIM covers maps, messages and social media for most people. Keep your US line on for calls and texts with data roaming off.
Several trips a year: a plan with included international data, such as Google Fi Unlimited Premium or T-Mobile Experience Beyond, can cost less over a year than buying passes or eSIMs each time.
Our full guide compares prices for Europe, Mexico and Japan and explains how to install an eSIM: Best eSIMs for traveling abroad from the US.
T-Mobile Experience More (5 GB) and Experience Beyond (15 GB), Verizon Unlimited Ultimate (15 GB), AT&T Elite 2.0, Google Fi Unlimited Premium and US Mobile Unlimited Premium include high-speed data abroad. Most other plans charge a daily or weekly pass.
For trips longer than a couple of days, a travel eSIM is almost always cheaper. A week of Verizon TravelPass costs $84; a 5 GB eSIM for Europe costs around $20.
