Prices are monthly, with autopay where the carrier offers it to everyone, before taxes and fees unless marked. "Not published" means the carrier does not list that number of lines; prepaid plans are priced per line. Sources: each carrier's own plan page, checked October 21, 2026. Always confirm the final price on the carrier's website.

How to pick the right phone plan in three steps

1. Choose the network that works where you live

Every plan in this table runs on one of three networks: Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile. Coverage is the one thing a cheap plan cannot fix, so start there. Check the coverage map of the network for your home, your work and the routes you drive. If friends or neighbors have good signal on a certain network, that is the best test there is.

Cheapest unlimited plan per network right now: Visible on Verizon ($25/mo), Cricket Select Unlimited on AT&T ($35/mo) and Tello Max Unlimited on T-Mobile ($25/mo regular price).

2. Work out how much data you really use

Your phone's settings show last month's mobile data use. Most people use far less than they think, because phones use Wi-Fi at home and at work. If you use under 10 GB a month, a plan with a set amount of data, such as Tello's or Mint's smaller plans, can cost half of an unlimited plan. If you stream video on the go or use your phone as a hotspot, look at the high-speed data and hotspot columns: "unlimited" plans differ a lot in how much fast data you actually get.

3. Decide which extras are worth paying for

The price gap between a $30 prepaid plan and a $90 postpaid plan pays for real things: priority data when the network is congested, international roaming, streaming subscriptions and phone deals. If you travel abroad several times a year or would pay for Netflix anyway, a premium plan can be good value. If not, you are paying for perks you do not use. Our guide MVNO vs. major carrier explains what you give up with a budget plan.

Prepaid vs. postpaid

Prepaid means you pay before the month starts, with no credit check and no contract. Many prepaid brands include taxes and fees in the price. Postpaid means you are billed after the month, usually with a credit check, and it is how the big three carriers sell their main plans and financed phones. Postpaid plans give larger multi-line discounts and more perks; prepaid plans give lower prices and more freedom to leave.

Frequently asked questions

Why are postpaid plans so much more expensive?

Postpaid plans from Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile bundle extras: priority data when the network is busy, large hotspot allowances, streaming subscriptions, international roaming and big phone discounts tied to a 36-month payment plan. If you do not use those extras, a prepaid plan on the same network costs a fraction of the price.

What does "taxes and fees included" mean?

Some prepaid brands, such as Visible, Cricket, Metro and Total Wireless, charge exactly the advertised price. Most postpaid plans and some prepaid brands add state and local taxes plus their own recovery fees, which can add several dollars per line. T-Mobile, for example, adds a regulatory fee of $5.49 per line on its newest plans.

Are intro prices worth it?

Often, yes, as long as you know the regular price. We sort by the average monthly price over the first year, so a plan that is cheap for six months and expensive afterwards does not jump to the top unfairly. You can usually switch plans or carriers when the intro period ends.

Which plan is best for a family?

Postpaid plans give the biggest multi-line discounts: T-Mobile and Google Fi publish all prices for one to four lines, and they drop sharply per line. Prepaid brands usually charge the same price per line, but because that price is low, four prepaid lines can still cost less than a postpaid family plan. Pick "4 lines" in the filter to compare.

Will my phone work on another carrier?

If your phone is unlocked and supports the bands of the new network, yes. Most phones sold in the last few years work on all three networks. Each carrier has a compatibility check on its website. Read our guide on unlocked vs. carrier phones.
