Unlocked phone or carrier deal?

Carrier deals spread the phone's price over 36 months and cancel each payment with a bill credit, as long as you keep a qualifying plan. That plan is usually one of the carrier's most expensive. An unlocked phone costs more up front, but you can pair it with any plan, including a budget plan from $25 a month.

The fair comparison is the total cost over 36 months: phone plus plan. Our guide unlocked vs. carrier phone walks through the math with an example.

Five ways to pay less for a phone

  1. Buy last year's model. When a new generation launches, the previous one drops in price.
  2. Compare unlocked prices across the manufacturer, big-box stores and marketplaces.
  3. Sell or trade in your old phone, and compare the carrier's trade-in value with what you would get selling it yourself.
  4. Switch carriers with a deal only if you plan to stay for the full term; leaving early makes the remaining balance due.
  5. Keep your phone longer. A new battery is far cheaper than a new phone, and most phones get software updates for years.

Check before you buy

  • The model number matches the US version (for 5G bands and warranty).
  • The listing says "unlocked", not locked to a specific carrier.
  • The return policy, especially on marketplaces.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to buy a phone from the carrier or unlocked?

Over three years, an unlocked phone on a budget plan is usually cheaper, because carrier phone deals require an expensive plan for the full 36 months. Carrier deals win when you would pick that premium plan anyway.

Should I buy last year's model?

Often, yes. When a new generation launches, the previous model drops in price at retailers and on marketplaces, and the real-world difference is usually small.

Can I use an unlocked phone on any plan?

Recent phones from Apple, Samsung and Google work on Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile and their budget brands. Check the new carrier's compatibility tool with your IMEI (dial *#06#).
