The PS5 Pro is the most powerful PlayStation you can buy, and since April 2026 also the most expensive one Sony has ever sold: $899.99 at list price, after two increases in less than a year. The standard PS5 and the Digital Edition went up too. The question is the same as at launch, only with higher stakes: does the Pro give you $300 worth of better gaming over the Digital Edition?

Sony raised US prices on April 2, 2026, pointing to "continued pressures in the global economic landscape": the Pro went up $150, the PS5 and the Digital Edition $100 each, and the PlayStation Portal $50. New consoles rarely get cheaper in their first years, so a price at or below list on a sealed unit is a fair deal. Consoles in short supply can sell above list on marketplaces; that is when you should skip eBay.
What the PS5 Pro does better
- A faster GPU. Sony says the Pro renders games up to 45% faster than the standard PS5. In practice, games hold a higher frame rate while also looking sharper.
- Better ray tracing. Reflections and lighting that cost a lot of performance on the PS5 run much better on the Pro.
- PSSR upscaling. PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution uses AI to upscale the image to a sharper picture on a 4K TV.
- 2TB of storage instead of 1TB, which matters when big games take 100GB or more each.
- Wi-Fi 7 for faster downloads if your router supports it.
The biggest gains come in games marked PS5 Pro Enhanced. On a standard PS5, many of those games make you choose between a sharp "quality" mode at 30 frames per second and a smoother "performance" mode with a softer image. On the Pro you often get both.
What stays the same
Every PS5 game runs on every PS5. There are no Pro-only games, the controller is the same DualSense, and PlayStation Plus works the same way. The Pro also has no disc drive: if you have a shelf of discs, budget for the separate PS5 Disc Drive, or buy the standard PS5 with a drive built in. The vertical stand is sold separately as well.
Who should buy which
PS5 Pro: you have a 4K TV, ideally with 120Hz, you play the big cinematic and online shooter games, and you notice frame rates. You are also future-proofed: more games get Pro-enhanced updates over time.
PS5 Digital Edition: you buy games digitally anyway and want the cheapest new PS5. Same games, same online play, 1TB of storage.
Standard PS5: you buy discs, borrow games, or like to resell games you finished. Over a few years, used and discounted discs can save more than the price difference.
Already own a PS5? The upgrade only makes sense if you play the enhanced games on a 4K TV. Trade-in values for a used PS5 are low compared with the Pro's price, so the real cost of the upgrade is close to the full $899.99.

Does the PS5 Pro have a disc drive?
No. Like the Digital Edition, the PS5 Pro comes without a disc drive. If you want to play discs, you buy the PS5 Disc Drive separately and attach it. The vertical stand is also sold separately.
Do all PS5 games run better on the PS5 Pro?
All PS5 games run on the Pro, and many get a small boost automatically. The biggest improvements come in games with a "PS5 Pro Enhanced" label, which developers have updated to use the Pro's faster graphics, improved ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling.
Is the PS5 Pro worth it on a 1080p TV?
Usually not. The Pro's main advantage is a sharper, steadier image on a 4K TV. On a 1080p TV you see much less of the difference, so the standard PS5 or Digital Edition is the better buy.
Why is the PS5 Pro more expensive on eBay than at the store?
When new consoles are in short supply, marketplace sellers often list them above list price. If the lowest eBay price in our table is above the list price, you are better off buying from PlayStation Direct or a big-box store at list price.
